
Jimmy Shergill’s real name is Jasjit Singh Gill. The Indian actor was born on 3 December 1970 . He was entered into Bollywood Cinema with Maachis, but then made a bigger name for himself in Punjabi movies also. Shergill belongs to a Jatt Sikh family and was born in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. After early education there, his family moved to Patiala in Punjab,the land of his ancestors. He did matriculation from Punjab Public School , Nabha, and graduated from Government Bikram College of Commerce, Patiala.
He completed his schooling in the art of acting by Sri Harpaul Singh, and with this training behind him moved to Mumbai City. In Gulzar’s Maachis made in 1996, his performance was acclaimed. The movie was based on terrorism in North India. Since then he has enjoyed partial success at the Box Office. His role in Mohabbatein (2000) was recognised. Shergill has done notable roles in films such as Munna Bhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munnabhai, Delhi Heights and A Wednesday.
The actor has appeared in nearly 40 Hindi films. Two of his best performances were in the movie Yahaan playing an Army Officer who gets romantically involved with a Kashmiri girl in the troubled valley of Kashmir and in Haasil where he portrays a college student who gets caught up in the dirty student politics of Allahabad University.
Shergill also starred in the hit My Name is Khan (2010) alongside Shahrukh Khan, appearing as his brother, and Kajol. In 2011 he has been busy making appearances in Tanu Weds Manu, Game and Saheb, Biwi aur Gangster.
Being a son of the soil, Shergill is making efforts to develop Punjabi cinema. He is probably the first Bollywood star who has vowed to do at least one Punjabi film every year to help the local cinema compete with the big budget Hindi films. Starting 2005 he has starred in Yaara Naal Baharan, Mannat, Tera Mera Ki Rishta, Mel Karade Rabba, Munde U.K. De and Dharti. These have done really well locally as well as overseas.
He has now started his own production house, by producing and acting in the Punjabi bi-lingual film titled Dharti in 2011. The same team that produced earlier movies like Mel Kara De Rabba, Tere Mera Ki Rishta joined hands with notable director Navneaat Singh to produce a block-buster opening. With the momentum continuing this movie’s full houses signify Shergill’s stature as the new Punjabi hero.
He is distantly related to Amrita Shergill the famous Indian Painter. He is married to Priyanka Puri from Delhi and has a son, Vir.
