
Rahul Bose born on 27th July 1967 is an Indian actor, director and screenwriter who is best known for his roles in many off beat movies. He is also Indian Rugby Union player and Social activist. He has been labeled as the superstar of the Indian Art cinema. He is half Bengali and half Punjabi. He lived in Kolkata during his childhood and then moved to Mumbai with his entire family. He actively participated in school plays and also was fond of sports like rugby, boxing and cricket. He is known to be coached by famous Indian cricketer and Saif Ali Khan’s father Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi.
Rahul made his
bollywood debut with the Anglo Indian movie English August. He then appeared in India’s first English serial A Mouthful of Sky. The serial was directed by renowned filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. In 1998, he starred in the unconventional comedy movie Bombay Boys opposite Naseeruddin Shah. The movie won great reviews and Rahul got noticed as the next talented upcoming actor. His next movie was another English Language film called Split Wide Open. The movie based on the water conflicts in the slums of Mumbai is rated as one of the most controversial movies of the film industry. Rahul for his part won the Best Actor award at the Singapore International Film Festival.
After receiving so much Critical acclaims Rahul did his first main stream Bollywood movie when he starred in the 1999 release Thakshak opposite Ajay Devgan and Tabu. The film did not work well at the box office and flopped badly, but Rahul Bose for his act loud applause from the critics and his role was labeled as the highlight of the entire film.
In the year 2001, Rahul Bose wrote and directed his first movie titled Everybody Says I’m Fine. The movie was an offbeat English language movie based on the lives of elite Mumbai residents who all unite at a Salon. At the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Rahul Bose finished as runner up to eventual winner John Schlesinger for the best directorial debut award. It was another feather in this unique and different actor and director. In 2003, he played the role of Rishi in the romantic musical comedy Jhankaar Beats. The movie had an excellent sound track but did not manage to do well at the box office however all leading actors received Rave reviews for their performance. In the same year 2004, Rahul starred in his biggest main stream Indian movie Chameli opposite Kareena Kapoor. This movie directed by Sudhir Mishra was based on the life story of a prostitute Chameli played by Kareena Kapoor. The movie became a huge critical success and Rahul again won rave reviews for his acting and won a lot of appreciation for standing his own infront of an accomplished mainstream actress like Kareena Kapoor.
In 2006, he acted in another mainstream Bollywood movie Pyar Ke Side effects opposite Mallika Sherawat. Not much was expected from the movie but much to everyone’s surprise the movie turned out to be a box office hit. Since then he has featured in movies like Maan Gaye Mughal-e-Azam, Dil Kabaddi, Fired, Tahaan, The Whisperers for which he also wrote the script and the recently released is Kuch Love jaisa
