
Sanjay Suri born on 6th April 1971 is a former model and current
bollywood actor and producer. He was born in Kashmir where he spent most of his early years with his family. He is the younger brother of two siblings Raj and Vandana. During his school days Sanjay was a very gifted Squash player and played regularly for his school and state team. He came face to face with a tragedy when in 1990 his father passed away in a terrorist attack which forced his family to flee. His family had to stay in a refugee camp in Jammu for a shirt while before they eventually moved to Delhi.
Upon moving to Delhi Sanjay Suri he got into the fashion world and did modeling assignments for Gillette, Nescafe, Times of India and Philishave.
Sunjay made his
bollywood debut in 1999 with the movie Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi which was also the debut of fellow co-stars Rinkie Khanna and Dino Morea. Sunjay won good reviews for his acting despite the fact that the movie was a big flop. More critical success followed with movies like Daman, Filhaal and Dil Vil Pyar Vyar, but it was the year 2003 and the movie Jhankar beats which made critics stand up and notice his actual talent. The movie starring Juhi Chawla, Rahul Bose and Rinki Khanna was applauded by the critics.
His success in Jhankar beats fetched him more roles in the
bollywood industry. Though movies like Dhoop, Plan and Insaaf flopped at the box office, Sanjay kept getting good reviews for his able acting. In 2004, he starred in the light romantic comedy Shaadi Ka Laddoo for which he again won great applause from the critics and audience alike. His next movie My Brother Nikhil proved another critical success for him as the critics gave the movie splendid reviews and hailed Sunjay Suri for his brilliant act of a HIV Victim. Another critically acclaimed performance followed in the movie Bas Ek Pal opposite Urmila Matondkar.
In 2008, he starred in the critically acclaimed Firaaq and again won tremendous reviews for his acting. His other 2008 release Sorry Bhai was another movie that was very well received by the critics. This romantic comedy also starring Sharman Joshi, Shabana Azmi and Boman Irani did not do too well at the box office but was hailed by the critics.
Sunjay Suri throughout his career has hardly had a blockbuster to his name but that has not stopped him from earning great praise and applause from the critics and audience. In the last few years he has stayed away from the mainstream
bollywood and concentrated more towards the meaningful art cinema. In 2010, his first production venture I AM released which also starred Juhi Chawla, Manisha Koirala, Rahul Bose and Nandita Das in pivotal role. The movie which is an amalgamation of four short films based on the story of four different sets of groups was the first movie in the history of Indian cinema which was funded and sourced by the actors working in it and the crowd which was done through social networking hubs like Facebook and twitter.
Sanjay Suri is married to Ambika Suri and the couple has two kids together.
