Model and actress Amrita Rao belongs to a cultured Barehman family from Mumbai. The wide-eyed, innocent looking bollywood star was born on 7th June, 1981. Amrita did her schooling in Mumbai, from C.G High School. She got herself enrolled in psychology department of Sophia College. Fascinated by the glamour of silver screen, yet Amrita had never planned to get herself into showbiz world considering the dream worthless without any approach and contacts from there. She was a brilliant and promising student of her college.
She went for an audition conducted in her college, organized by the famous brand of Fairever Face Cream. She was the successful contestant amongst 60 other participants. The event became a turning point for her life and led her to pursue her career as a model. Appearing in the Fairever Face Cream ad was a dream like experience for Amrita. But she became a hit model after her commercial for Close Up. It gave her recognition all over India and soon after, she became one of the most popular models of the country. She modeled for the Bru Coffee and Perk Karwa Chaut commercials directed by Cadbury. Many other famous brands signed her as model to promote their products, including Pantene Hair Wash, Clean & Clear Face Wash, Domino’s Pizza, Wringly Chewing Gum and HMT Watches. Through her commercials, she grabbed the attention of various film makers in Bollywood and received offers from them to sign their movies. At that time she preferred to complete her studies first and obtained a degree in psychology.
Amrita started her career in showbiz world as a model in the beginning. In 2002, she made her debut in bollywood when she performed in “Ab Ke Baras”, the movie was a flop though. In the following year, she appeared in Ishq Vishk, that turned her into a super-hit star overnight. 2003 was lucky year for her because of that blockbuster. She obtained the nomination for the category of the Best Female Debut in Filmfare awards. In 2004, she played a leading role in “Main Hoon Na” opposite Zahid Khan. The film was a huge success at the box office. “Masti” was her other major hit in the same year.
She faced troubles with her career when a few of her releases went flop in a series. “To Aisi” and “Shikhar” were relased in 2005, while in 2006 “Pyare Mohan” was released. Things were messy when these movies were failed to earn any business at the box office. However, an eminent breakthrough was achieved by her with the release of “Vivah” starring Shahid Kapoor opposite her. “Vivah” was another commercial success, a huge blockbuster, released in 2006. She won a Dadasheb phalke Academy Award for her mature and touching performance in the movie.
Amrita enjoys reading in leisure, according to her; reading brings immense pleasure and fun in her life. She likes short stories the most. Even being a part of limelight, Amrita is very simple by nature. She is a complete home bird and likes to spend her free time at home preferably. She is a huge fan of Sajid Khan’s shows.
