
Dimple Chunnibhai Kapadia, daughter of the famous Gujrati industrialist Chunnibhai Kapadia and Betty, is amongst the most graceful and sensitizing actresses of the Bollywood industry. She was born on 8th June 1957, making her a Gemini. Versatile as ever, Dimple Kapadia has marked her presence in various blockbusters of Indian Cinema including Bobby (1973), Rudaali (1993), Saagar (1985), Lekin... (1991) and Drishti (1990). She has over 69 films to her credit and she is amongst those actresses of tinsel town who are still just as popular and bewitching as she was when she joined the industry.
Dimple Kapadia became a part of the silver screen when she was barely 16 years old. She starred alongside Rishi Kapoor, son of the director Raj Kapoor. Bobby marked the debut in mainstream of both Dimple Kapadia and Rishi Kapoor. This movie is labeled under the Top 25 Must Watch Bollywood Movies Of All Times by Indiantimes Movies. Not only was this a major blockbuster, but it also introduced the Indian Cinema to a new flavor – a teenage romantic flick where social stratification plays an important part.
Even though Bobby made Dimple Kapadia the star of the 1970’s, she retired just 6 months before the release of her movie to marry the infamous actor, Rajesh Khanna. At that time Dimple was 16 years old and Rajesh Khanna was 31 years old. 11 years in to the marriage with two daughters, the marriage between the two heartthrobs dissolved. However, Dimple Kapadia made her comeback with the immensely popular and controversial movie Saagar. This film of Ramesh Sippy showed Dimple Kapadia is a slight topless scene which stirred up a lot of controversy back in the 80’s. Saagar not only marked a successful comeback for Dimple, but also marked the entrance of India for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1985.
The twelve year break from the tinsel town did much good to Dimple Kapadia. She raised her two daughters, Twinkle Khanna an Rinke Khanna who also entered the Bollywood industry. Following her seperation with Rajesh Khanna, the animosity between the two prevailed for a long time, pursuing over to law-suits and court-rooms. However, they have both reconciled their differences and are now even seen together socializing at parties. Dimple Kapadia also campaigned for Rajesh Khanna’s election. In fact, it was right after her separation that Dimple Returned to the
bollywood industry. And not only that, it marked the start of her reign of indian cinema with major hits in the 80’s and 90’s. Her best works include Rudaali, Krantiveer and Dhrishti.
Dimple Kapadia has numerous awards to her name. In 1973 she won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for Bobby and in 1985 for Saagar. In 1993, she won the National Film Award for best actress for Rudaali and also the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance for Rudaali. In 1994 she won the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for Krantiveer. Similarly, the Bengali Film Journalists Association Award also awarded Dimple Kapadia with the Best Actress Award for Drishti.
In the recent past, Dimple Kapadia has kept her presence alive in the cinema through her appearance in Dil Chahta hai in 2001, Being Cyrus which was her first English language film in 2006, Luck by Chance 2008, Animated movie Jumbo, Dabang one of the biggest blockbuster of Indian Cinema, Patialia house in which she played the role of her real-life son-in-law Akshay Kumar’s mother and Bombay Mittayi in 2010 which was a Malayalam film.
Even at the age of 54, Dimple kapadia is just as beautiful, admirable and sensuous as she was back in the days. And it is still a pleasure to see this beauty on the big screen with her fans who still cheer for her and attend the first day first show of her movies to date.
