The actress with a Marathi background was born on 5th August 1974 in Mumbai. Her mother Tanuja is a well known Indian film actress of yesteryear. Her father the Late Shomu Mukherjee also belonged to the film fraternity. She is married to
bollywood superstar Ajay Devgan.
Kajol made her debut in the year 1992 which the movie Bekhudi, the film was a complete box office washout. She got her big breakthrough movie in the year 1993 when she was signed to play the lead role in Abbas Mustan’s romantic thriller Baazigar opposite Shahrukh Khan. This was the start of Kajol-Shahrukh Jodi that ruled the Indian Cinema for many years. In 1994 she signed another big banner movie which was Yash Raj Film’s Yeh Dillagi opposite Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan. The movie was a major success at the box office and Kajol was widely applauded for her portrayal of Sapna, which also led to her getting her first Best Actress nomination at the Filmfare awards.
The year 1995 proved to be the year when it all changed for this charismatic actress. First she started in Rakesh Roshan’s Karan Arjun opposite Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan. The movie about the reincarnation of two brothers was a smash hit. Her second movie of the year Aditiya Chopra’s directorial debut Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. Well lets just say that the movie not only was the highest grossing of the year but turned out to be the most successful and the long running movies in the history of Indian cinema. Her role of Simran was immortalized and still lives fresh in the memory of every fan. The movie till this day is played in a theatre in Mumbai. The movie overall won then Filmfare awards and Kajol won her first Filmfare best actress award for her splendid performance.
In 1997 Kajol acted in the movie Gupt: The hidden truth opposite Bobby Deol. This thrilling movie turned out to be the highest grossing of the movie and for the first time Kajol did a negative role in the movie. Her acting received tons of praises from the media and film fraternity. She also won the award for Best Actress in a negative role. Her second successful movie of the year was the romantic comedy Ishq opposite hubby Ajay Devgan, Amir Khan and Juhi Chawla.
The year 1998 proved yet another fruitful year for Kajol as she starred in 4 blockbusters of the year. Pyar Kiya to Darna Kya opposite Salman Khan, Dushman alongside Sanjay Dutt in which she played a double role, Pyar to honi hi Tha opposite Ajay Devgan and last but by no means the last Karan Johar’s directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota hai opposite Shahrukh Khan and her cousin Rani Mukherjee. For her performance in Kuch Kuch hota hai she won her second Filmfare best actress award.
After that Kajol has never looked back with further success in movies like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Fanna & My Name is Khan. In 2001 after the release of Kabhi Khusi Kabhi Gham she took a break of 2 years from films. During that time she became the mother of a baby girl named Nysa.
If there is one modern day actress who can be trusted with any role or movie, it is definitely Kajol. Her screen persona, intensity, comic timing defines her. Though she is rarely seen in movies nowadays, every big banner and accomplished director still wants to her work with her.
