
Konkona Sen also known as Konkona Sen Sharma born on 3rd December 1979 is an Indian Actress who mainly does art and serious movies. Her father Mukul Sharma was a Journalist and her mother is the famous actress and film maker Aparna Sen. Konkana graduated from St. Stephen’s College with an English language degree.
Konkona’s movie career started as a child artist when she features in the 1983 movie Indira. After having worked in a few Bengali movies Konkona got signed for an English language movie titled Mr. and Mrs. Iyer in the year 2001. The movie was hailed by the critics and Konkona for her performance won the prestigious National Award for Best Actress. In 2010 Filmfare included her performance in the “Top 80 Iconic performances” in the history of Indian Cinema.
From 2001 till 2004 she acted in as many as 4 English language movies. Following her success in the Anglo Indian movies Konkona made her mainstream
bollywood debut with Madhur Bhandarkar’s critically acclaimed masterpiece Page 3. Her character of a Journalist drew applause from all the corners of the film industry and with this she became a known face.
In the year 2006 she got the chance to work with another critically acclaimed director in Vishal Bharadwaj when she was signed for the movie Omkara. The movie was a critical and box office success and Konkona’s portrayal of a Village house wife won her the Filmfare and National award for the best supporting actress.
Following her great performance in Page 3, Madhur Bhandarkar again signed Konkana for his next movie Traffic Signal, in which she had the tough role of a street prostitute and again praises followed from all parts of the globe for her act in Traffic Signal. With so much success and that too so early on in her career she was slowly and gradually getting recognized as one of the best actress. Next up was Anurag Basu’s Life in a Metro. The audience hailed the movie and Konkona again won all the accolades for yet another accomplished and mature performance. She received her second Filmfare award for best supporting actress for her act in Life in a Metro.
It didn’t took long for all the big banners of
bollywood to notice her immense talent as in the year 2007 Giant’s of the indian cinema Yash Raj Film’s signed her in two of their movies. Her first movie with them was titled Laaga Chunari Mein Daag opposite Rani Mukherjee, Kunal Kapoor & Abhishek Bachan. The movie was critically and commercially but her performance was once again hailed and it was labeled the only shinning light in an otherwise dull movie. Her second release with Yash Raj Film’s was Madhuri Dixit’s comeback movie Aaja Nachle. The movie failed at the box office but her performance was termed as remarkable. Special mention to be given to the fact that the way she held her own in front of the charismatic and beautiful Madhuri was outstanding. The movie was focused entirely on Madhuri and her dance but Konkona still managed to steal the limelight.
If Kareena, Priyanka, Katrina are the queens of mainstream
bollywood, Konkona Sen Sharma is definitely the queen of modern-day serious art cinema. The ease with which she goes about her acting deserves brownie points.
On the personal front Konkona and co-star and actor Ranvir Shorey started dating in the year 2007. The star couple finally tied the knot on 3rd September 2010 and have a baby boy named Haroon who was born on 15th March 2011 in Mumbai.
