Mahi Gill born on 19th December 1975 is an Indian actress who is best known for her bravura performance in Dev D. She belongs to a Punjabi Sikh family from Chandigarh. She did her Master’s degree from Punjab University in Theatre studies. Mahi Gill’s career started with the Punjabi Flick Hawayein, she went on to do a few more Punjabi movies before she was spotted by Anurag Kashyap for his critically acclaimed movie Mahi Gill Dev D which was a modern day version of Devdas. She played the role of Paru, who is the love interest of Dev. Her performance in the movie was nothing short of outstanding. So much so that she won the Critics award for Best actress at the Filmfare awards.

In 2009 Mahi featured in an unknown movie Aagey se right alongside Shreyas Tapade & Kay Kay Menon. The movie’s release was badly planned as it collided with Muharram. The movie was a complete box office dud and critics also initially didn’t take much notice of this movie, however later some fans started up a blog for the movie and called it an unseen and underrated Masterpiece.

Mahi Gill also played a side supporting role in last year’s smash hit Dabangg starring Salman Khan and Sunakshi Sinha. In 2011 she starred in Ram Gopal Verma’s Not a Love Story which was based on the real life murder of Neeraj Grover in 2008. The movie was given a mixed response by the critics. While known critic Taran Adarsh gave the movie 4 stars and called it Ram Gopal Verma’s best work to date, Raja Sen of Rediff gave it 1.5 stars out of 5. The movie was a complete washout at the box office due to its brutal nature. Her other 2011 release Utt Pataang came and went without a notice. Mahi Gill has immense talent and that is the reason that she is being offered tough roles in mainly art movies. Not only that, she has good looks which give her an added advantage. Her next assignment will be the movie Paan Singh Tomar opposite Irfan Khan.
