Cornish's first acting job was playing a quadriplegic in two scenes of
a TV series (she was 15 years old). At age 16, she relocated from the
170-acre family farm to Newcastle and quickly landed a role on an
Australian police drama that ran two years. A few more TV movies and
series would follow, until she finally made a name for herself
internationally playing a confused teen on the road to self-discovery
in 2004's
Somersault,
which won her several awards, including the Australian Film Institute's
Best Actress honor. In 2006, she co-starred with Russell Crowe (who
actually sought her out for the part) in Ridley Scott's
A Good Year. In the indie film
Candy, she starred as a heroin addict opposite Heath Ledger. Also that year, she completed filming
The Golden Age,
with Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush. Amidst all of her career
advancements, there was a rumor that her relationship with Ryan
Phillippe (her co-star in an upcoming Kimberly Peirce project) was the
biggest reason why Phillippe split with his wife, Reese Witherspoon.
