Keener broke into the film industry with one line in 1986's About Last Night, which earned her a SAG card. In 2000, she received her first Academy Award nomination for her role in Being John Malkovich, however, the Oscar went to Angelina Jolie. Keener went on to star in Death to Smoochy and indie favorite, Lovely & Amazing. She later became the woman who de-virginized The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Then in 2005's Capote, she portrayed To Kill a Mockingbird author Harper Lee, earning her a second Academy Award nomination.


1. She has been close friends with Brad Pitt since they both starred in 1991's Johnny Suede
2. She was temporarily expelled in 11th grade then later graduated from Monsignor Pace High School in 1976.
3. She was an assistant casting director to Gail Eisenstadt. When Eisenstadt was dying of lung cancer, she convinced Keener to pursue acting.
4. Writer/Director Tom Dicillo wrote the lead role in The Real Blonde specifically for Keener.
5. While a sophomore at Wheaton College, she was shut out of a photography course and took a theater ensemble class instead.
