1-MINUTE RESUME FOR ELIZABETH TAYLOR
Although Taylor was born and raised in England until the age of seven,
her parents were American, both originally from Kansas. When the family
relocated to Los Angeles, she went for a screen test and Universal
Pictures quickly signed her to a contract, releasing her first film,
There's One Born Every Minute in 1942 when she was just 10 years old. She was soon put under contract by MGM where she made
Lassie Come Home (1943) and the movie that made her a true star,
National Velvet
(1944). Known as one of the last great celebrities of the "studio
system," Taylor has worked with a veritable who's who of Hollywood
screen legends and is best known for her work in
A Place in the Sun (1951),
Giant (1956),
Raintree County (1957),
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958),
Suddenly, Last Summer (1959) and earning Oscars for
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966) and
Butterfield 8 (1960).
5 Things:
1. Upon the death of her friend Rock Hudson in 1985, she began her
crusade on the behalf of AIDS sufferers and her organization, AMFAR,
has raised over $250 million since its creation.
2. She was a frequent guest at the infamous Studio 54.
3. At one point during a life-threatening illness while filming Butterfield 8 (1960), she was actually pronounced dead.
