For years, it was pragmatic to assume that husband William H. Macy was more famous than Huffman. Though she drew critical acclaim as the quick-witted Dana Whitaker of Sports Night, which in turn earned her a Golden Globe nomination, it wasn't until her Emmy-winning role as Lynette on Desperate Housewives did Huffman become a household name. Still reaping the benefits of small-screen success in 2006, Huffman starred as the gender-bending lead of Transamerica, which earned her a Golden Globe and and an Oscar nomination.


1. Her nickname "Flicka" comes from the book and 1943 movie My Friend Flicka. "Flicka" means "girl" in Swedish.
2. She confessed to Oprah that she dreamt of being a back-up singer. In Feb. 2005, Oprah arranged for Huffman to sing back-up vocals for Tina Turner.
3. She met husband William H. Macy when she was one of his students at the Atlantic Theater Company.
4. In 1994, she was fired from the TV show Thunder Alley.
5. She is the youngest of seven daughters.
