Growing up very poor in Tennessee, according to Fox herself, she began drama and dance lessons at the age of five. At 13, she garnered several awards at the 1999 American Modeling and Talent Convention, and after her film debut as Brianna Wallace in the Olsen twins vehicle, Holiday in the Sun (2001), she landed the role of Carla in 2004's Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen with Lindsey Lohan. Nicknamed Mega Fox, she was soon cast in her first recurring role in a television series on Hope & Faith (2004-2006), a high-profile gig that led to her breakout role in the 2007 film Transformers playing Shia LaBeouf's love interest.
