1-MINUTE RESUME FOR SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR
The actress best known as
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
on TV was a veteran by the time she reached drinking age. She got her
start at age 4, landed a controversial Burger King commercial at 5 and
continued in film and TV until her breakthrough role at 16 as Susan
Lucci's daughter on
All My Children made her an Emmy-winning
star. By 22, she'd made more than 100 commercials, become a Wilhelmina
model and the first Maybelline spokeswoman since Linda Carter in the
'70s, firmly established her starring role in what was to be the
long-running
Buffy series and made several hugely popular movies, including
Cruel Intentions,
I Know What You Did Last Summer and
Scream 2. In recent years, though she's kept a lower public profile, her films have remained successful; both
Scooby Doo (2002) and
The Grudge (2004) were blockbusters.
5 Things:
1. She initially auditioned for the role of Buffy's nemesis,
Cordelia, but then read multiple times for Buffy and landed the lead.
2. Her parents divorced when she was about 7; growing up, she never
had contact with her father, who died of unknown causes in his
Manhattan apartment in 2001.
3. A bona fide athlete, Gellar was a competitive figure skater for
three years, ranking third in New York regionals, and earned a brown
belt in Tae Kwon Do. She also likes rollerblading, waterskiing and
cliff-diving.
4. She has said she will never do nude scenes.
5. She's heavily involved in fundraising and charitable efforts for
organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Make-a-Wish
Foundation.
Quote:
"I prefer girl power to feminism, because girl power still has an ounce
of femininity to it. There's no femininity in feminism, which is really
weird, because it's technically the same word."
