Though she had no aspirations to become an actress, then-boyfriend/husband Chris Sarandon did. She accompanied him on a reading for an agent, and the agent wound up signing them both. Five days later she landed her first role in 1970's Joe. After achieving cult stardom with The Rocky Horror Picture Show, she made a career performing in acclaimed films that portray strong, smart, independent women, like Thelma & Louise, Bull Durham and Dead Man Walking (which scored her a Best Actress Oscar), and has drawn both praise and criticism for her outspoken views on politics. Her longtime companion (since 1988) is similarly outspoken actor Tim Robbins, with whom she has two sons.


1. She grew up the eldest of 9 children (5 girls and 4 boys) in a conservative Catholic family.
2. She keeps her Oscar, the first ever for a performance as a nun, in the bathroom.
