
A very modest and one of the top wicket-keeper-batsman, Adam Gilchrist was in real the backbone of the Australian team. He proved himself as a very central and essential part of the Australian national team and a great legendary player in the history of cricket in particular and of sports in general.
Adam Craig Gilchrist was born in Bellingen, New South Wales, Australia on November 14, 1971. He got his education from Deniliquin Public School and Kadina High School. He was fond of cricket and wanted to be a fast bowler from an early age and his parents Stan and June Gilchrist supported him at all times. As a child, he was once awestruck by the charm of the wicket keeping gloves, unknowingly that these gloves will become his destiny and then he went on becoming one of the best wicketkeepers in international cricket. He is lovingly called as Gilly or Churchy and he has three siblings. Gilchrist is wedded to his classmate and school beloved Melinda and have two sons and a daughter.
Gilchrist is one of the most forceful left-handed batsmen and successful wicketkeepers in test cricket history. He has represented Australia as one of the greatest wicketkeepers in international cricket. He is famous for his cool attitude, batting and wicket keeping style. He has millions of fans across the globe, who admires his style and effective game. He has got the leadership qualities and he always managed to lead his team and has also led his side to many victories. He has a world record for most dismissals by a wicket keeper in ODIs. This left-handed aggressive batsman has one of the uppermost and highest strike-rate in the history of both one-day and Test cricket.
He started of his international career in 1996 as replacement to an injured Ian Healy in the Australian team. He played his first One Day International (ODI) in 1996 against South Africa in Faridabad, India, which proved his talent and got him a permanent place in the team. He was the main players who guide Australia to win a world cup. He was also a major player in Ashes series in 2001, when Australia swept England to win the series 4-1. He has played as an opening batsman from Australian side as well.
Gilchrist is the one and only batsman in the history to hit 100 sixes in Test and has scored the maximum number of centuries by a wicket-keeper in both Test (17) and ODI (16) career.
In his remarkable and well-known journey, he has scored 9,619 runs in 287 ODIs and 5,570 runs in 96 Tests for Australia with a record of four hundred and seventy two ODI dismissals and 416 Test dismissals (379 + 37). Gilchrist is the sole wicketkeeper to have leaded the Australian team for One Day and Test matches so far.
He announced his retirement from International cricket in March 2008, after breaking the world record for the maximum dismissals by a wicketkeeper. After his retirement to international cricket, he has joined Indian Premier League as the captain of team Kings XI Punjab.
His list of achievements is barely possible to mention. Adam Gilchrist was named one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year in 2002. He was also acknowledged as Australia's ODI Player of the Year in 2003 and 2004. In 2003, Gilly was decorated with the Allan Border Medal for outstanding performances in Test and One-day cricket. In 2004, Gilchrist was named in the Richie Benaud's Greatest XI. In the year 2007, he was also nominated as the nineth greates rounder of the century.
There is no doubt that he was and he will remain a celebrated player in the sports world. Apart from his cricket career he has been greatly involved in charity work for needy children. His spirit to play rule the world now his sprit to help and donate.
