Often billed as quirky and eccentric, Goldblum's career started when director Robert Altman saw him in a comic stage production in the 1970s and cast him in California Split and Nashville. He made a number of comedies throughout the 1970s and '80s, some of his most noteworthy roles being the lead in David Cronenberg's gross-out obsession tale The Fly and The Tall Guy, as well as pivotal parts in The Big Chill, Jurassic Park and Independence Day.
