After a fruitful run in theater while attending Yale University, Giamatti emerged onto the big screen, playing memorable character roles in Sabrina and Donnie Brasco. In 1997, he made a huge splash as Pig Vomit in Howard Stern's Private Parts. Like Private Parts, Giamatti has often portrayed characters based on real people like in 1999's Man on the Moon, 2002's American Splendor and 2005's Cinderella Man. Many feel that Giamatti was snubbed of an Oscar nomination in 2005 for his lead role in Sideways (not to mention 2004's American Splendor), but was offered one the next year for his supporting role in Cinderella Man.


1. In the 1998 remake of Doctor Dolittle, Paul portrayed a human in charge of a talking orangutan. In the 2001 remake of Planet of the Apes, he portrays a talking orangutan in charge of humans.
2. He is the son of Bartlett Giamatti, the late president of Yale University and MLB commissioner and nemesis of Pete Rose.
3. He is the voice talent for Tiger Woods headcover in a series of Nike Golf commercials.
4. Despite his pinot-obsessed role in 2004's Sideways, he admits that he has very little knowledge of wines and is not a great fan of them.
5. He is Italian-American.
