1-MINUTE RESUME FOR RON HOWARD
As a kid, Howard was one of TV's most recognizable child stars, first playing Opie on
The Andy Griffith Show, then Richie Cunningham on
Happy Days. Once he hit adulthood, however, Howard moved from acting to directing, helming such high-profile projects as
Splash,
Backdraft,
Apollo 13 and
EdTV, finally hitting Oscar pay dirt with 2001's
A Beautiful Mind, which won both director and Best Picture honors. He followed with Oscar-contender
Cinderella Man and 2006's most controversy-steeped film,
The Da Vinci Code.
5 Things:
1. Howard cast both of his parents in Apollo 13 (1995). Daughter Bryce also has a cameo appearance.
2. The avid cricket fan took time out of directing The Da Vinci Code to attend the final Ashes test match between England and Australia.
3. He was awarded the National Medal of Arts from the National Endowment of the Arts in 2003.
4. Howard provided the voice-over for the TV series Arrested Development, which he executive produced.
5. He earned $10 million for A Beautiful Mind.
Quote:
On his directing career: "It was always my dream to be a director. A
lot of it had to do with controlling my own destiny, because as a young
actor you feel at everyone's disposal. But I wanted to become a leader
in the business."
