Steve Carell Profile & Biography

Name: Steve Carell

Birth Name: Steven Carell

Birthdate: Aug. 16, 1963

Birthplace: Acton, Mass.
1-MINUTE RESUME FOR STEVE CARELL

Carell originally planned to be a lawyer, but his obvious comic gifts led him instead to sketch comedy. He made a name for himself on Dana Carvey's short-lived variety show as a writer, and also as the voice of Gary, half of "The Ambiguously Gay Duo," one of Saturday Night Live's most inappropriately funny cartoon shorts. His gig on Comedy Central's The Daily Show With Jon Stewart gave Carell the exposure to cross over to film, and he gave stellar supporting performances in Bruce Almighty (2003) and Anchorman (2004). He played an aging, never-been-laid electronics salesman in The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005), which was his first starring role and also one of the year's box-office leaders. Meanwhile, Carell's side gig playing the easy-to-hate boss man on NBC's U.S. version of Britcom The Office was winning the actor accolades and, eventually, a Golden Globe.

5 Things:

1. In 2005, Entertainment Weekly named Carell the No. 2 Entertainer of the Year.
2. He was cast in three failed sitcoms before landing a solid one: NBC's hit The Office.
3. He attended Denison University, which is also the alma mater of Jennifer Garner, Hal Holbrook, John Davidson, John Schuck and comedian Tom Cotter.
4. Carell worked the overnight shift in a store in Maynard, Mass., and takes many of his characters from this experience.
5. The actor who often plays newsmen was the editor-in-chief of his high-school newspaper, Newton South's The Lion's Roar.

Quote:

On being chosen for the U.S. remake of The Office: "It's not a master plan to do every remake and every re-creation of icons. It's just what I've been hired to do."
