With his father's encouragement, Efron took his first step toward acting with voice lessons at age 11. After appearing in successful high school productions of Gypsy, Little Shop of Horrors, The Music Man, Peter Pan and Mame, guest roles on television series quickly followed once his drama teacher introduced him to her own Hollywood talent agent. Playing the role of girl-crazy Cameron Bale on the WB series Summerland (2004-2005) proved a pivotal career move for Efron as it landed him a starring role in the Disney Channel original movie High School Musical (2006) as Troy Bolton, a role for which he is best known among teenage audiences as both a talented actor and singer. He took these skills to the big screen with his breakout role as Link Larkin in the 2007 musical update of Hairspray, to be followed by a musical update of the Kevin Bacon vehicle, Footloose.
