We have seen path breaking movies featuring UFOs and aliens in Hollywood and they have been quite successfully deployed theme with excellent screenplay, visuals and storyline. This power of unknown surely attracts and appeals movie makers in Bollywood town as well and to take an initiative on this theme Rakesh Roshan successfully projected the concept of alien in an Indian movie. Now yet another time this theme is attempted by Shirish Kunder.
JOKER from its outlook sounded much inspired with the concept of KOI MIL GAYA featuring alien and UFO, SWADES with a well settled US Indian to return to his village, LAGAAN with a dhoti wearing hero to strike the villagers and GOLMAAL with Shreyas Talpade's and Tusshar Kapoor's jumbled speech. Thus here you seek to find the essence of these famous Bollywood blockbusters. However despite of all this charm together, JOKER fails to fall on the right track and is a failure attempt.
The concept of the movie begins in 1947 when India and Pakistan were parted and there was a village of Paglapur which could find a place in either of the countries. This village is depicted to have been home to the largest mental asylum in the area. The villagers after partition established this place as their own republic and named it Paglapur. For the next 60 years, this place remains as it is whereas the outside world completely changed. There was no electricity, TV, water and this place remained isolated from the outside world.
Agastya played by
Akshay Kumar who is a NASA scientist of Indian origin and his friend
Sonakshi Sinha find themselves travelling to the village of Paglapur whereas the rest of the world has forgotten about this village.
Agastya is shown to be working on a project where he is trying to create a device to talk to aliens. Now the question arises that why in the world they need to travel to such kind of a village and what would they be doing that would bring this village in to notice of rest of the world?
The title of this movie however suggests that this movie may be about a funny man who tries to make people laugh with his jokes but this one is about people who pretend being aliens and they then actually face an alien. The setting of the movie seems enchanting with the story entirely based on an isolated village. But this interesting concept could not become an equally interesting movie. The director Shirish Kunder creates the plot but the movie doesn't work out well to appeal audience neither by its theme nor through the jokes. Even the concept of aliens doesn't work out here. This movie seems to ridicule about things related to aliens and UFOs.
The first of the movie seems passable but the later part is completely awkward and the idea used here when aliens dance on the Indian tracks is quite weird. Here one would thing that why Shirish even attempted this kind of movie. Shirish may wished to create a complete entertainer through this movie but his attempt fails this time with Joker. This movie is however based on an unusual storyline but to keep the grab of it for two hours was the task which could not be accomplished here. You would be thanking the makers to have this movie made for less than 2 hours as after some point of time this movie appears to be completely bizarre and weird.
The
music album of the movie is also not appealing. The track Kafirana pictured on Chitrangda Singh is quite attractive while the rest of the songs are fast forward types in the album. The cinematography and effects are irregular and patchy.
Character of Akshay here seems monotonous and Sonakshi also doesn't get much scope here. All the charm here is missing. Shreyas Talpade's character also doesn't have much meat.
Minissha Lamba is almost not there. Alexx O'Nell is okay. Other supporting stars including Arya Babbar, Vindu Dara Singh, Asrani, Darshan Jariwala, Anjan Srivastava, Avtar Gill, Vrajesh Hirjee, Pitobash, Gurpreet Guggi, Sanjay Mishra and Bikramjeet Kanwarpal are only there to fill in the gaps.
Overall this movie is a complete disaster!
